Location: GUIs > Windows > Applications for Windows 1.x/2.xOr 'Sick Windows Tricks 4'!
I had previously posted some freeware games and developer samples forWindows 1.x and 2.x w1w2app.zip Since then afew more applications have surfaced.
Lets start with this little surprise: How often do you see a NEW applicationfor Windows 1? Well then, make this the first time since about 1987!
I present WineMine for Windows 1.01!
This is a port of the MineSweeper program used by ReactOS and Wine.Surprisingly it uses a conservative set of WIN APIs that made it easy torecompile for Windows 1. After working around a couple of Windows 1.x/2.xbugs and shortcomings, it seems to work fairly well!
It runs natively under Windows 1.x, 2.x and in 'compatibility mode'under Windows 3.x. The Windows 1.x version will not run under Windows 95/NTor later, but I have included a resource converted version that will.

While searching around for Windows 1.0 applications, I came acrossthe site of Charles Petzold, who has written a number of books on Win 16/32programming over the years: http://www.charlespetzold.com/etc/windows1/On this page he demonstrates a sample 'Cake' program for Windows 1.x, butwhere is the executable? Is the cake a lie?!
The source code is posted, and probably the intent is that you shouldcompile it yourself. But for your convenience, I made you a cake!

Here is an interesting game that was written in 1985 for Windows 1.01called 'Balance of Power'.
It appears it was distributed as a 'DOS' program on a self-booting 360kfloppy disk, and used a very minimal Windows 1.01 runtime.

At long, long, last a copy of Aldus PageMaker 1.00 has appeared!
You could probably count the number of significant commercial applicationsdeveloped for Windows 1.x on one hand, and this was one of them.
For the sake of historical preservation: AldusPageMaker1_0.zip
Also a slightly newer version with the Windows 1.04 runtime: AldusPageMaker 1.0A.zip

Micrografx In*a*Vision!!!
The other known significant commercial application for Windows 1.x wasMicrografx In*a*Vision. The Windows 2 and later versions of this were renamedto 'Designer'.
ZSoft PC Paintbrush for Windows version 1.05 turned up.
PC Paintbrush 1.05 for Microsoft Windows is a port of ZSoft's DOS-BasedPC Paintbrush program to the Microsoft Windows environment. This versionwas included on the mouse driver disk of some Windows 2 / Microsoft Mousebundles, but ZSoft also advertised it as a standalone product. A laterversion of this program was bundled with Windows 3.x as Microsoft Paintbrush.
Although it was bundled with and intended for use with Windows 2, itis also designed to run under Windows 1.x.
This Windows version should not be confused with the more popular versionof PC Paintbrush for DOS. Also when Zsoft was bought out, Softkey confusinglyrestarted the version number over with PC Paintbrush 1.00 for their commercialWindows 3.x version release. (It is also no relation to the software 'PCPaint' bundled with Mouse Systems mice.)
The ability to edit and display color bit-mapped graphics under Windows1 is an interesting feat. Windows 1 and 2 only support monochrome deviceindependent bitmaps, with no concept of a pallet. As such, all color PCXfiles are assumed to match the 8-color EGA pallet used by Windows 1 and2. (So to create a PCX file it will open, it must have the first 8 colorsmatch that pallet)
Micrografx Draw turned up! It is a vector drawing tool, similar toIn*A*Vision, but geared more towards drawing clipart rather than an illustrationtool. It bundles a Windows 1.03 runtime, and includes a few extra driversnot supplied by Microsoft.

Finally, here are a few more small code sample apps that run underWindows 1.x and happen to be slightly useful or interesting on their own.
This includes a hexadecimal calculator, a simple bouncing ball program,a tool for saving the contents of the clipboard, and a clock that sitsin the icon area - similar to Windows 95 and later.

Also came across several more shareware programs. First, a Mah Jongprogram called Taipei that seems to run great under Windows 1, althoughthe readme suggests it was for Windows 2. Also an earlier version of theMissile Command-like Starbase program that works under Windows 1. And finallysome miscellaneous shareware apps including a checkers program that happento run under Windows 1.

Oh, and also:
Although, just a demo version. The full version still needs to showup.
Another update for another demo:
A limited Demo version of Palantir WinText, a fairly full featured editor, and WinTime, a resource scheduling program.
Supposedly WinText was the first real commercial word processor forWindows 1. Amazingly, it supports opening multiple documents at the sametime, using overlapping MDI windows.
Although these are demo versions, apparently they can edit and savefiles just fine. They are not allowed to print and the spell checker isnot included.
This demo requires at least Windows 1.03 to work properly.
Most reviews said the WinText/WinTime 1.0 versions were for Windows2, but clearly these two applications (probably Version 1.5) support Windows1.
Coast guard facility inspector pqs study guide. Palantir also produced a number of other applications that may haverun under Windows 1, assuming they were released before they went out ofbusiness::
- 'WinCalc' - a spreadsheet
- 'WinFiler' - a database called
- 'Windows Spell' - the WinText spell checker offered as a standalone product.
- 'NetTime' - a network version of WinTime
- 'Windows InTalk' their telecommunication program they brought over fromthe Mac
- 'WinLook' - an image manager
- 'WinPaint' - a paint program
- 'WinFonts' - a font editor
Also, a few more demo programs:
Cadlogic Instinct 1.0 - Even though this was found in a shareware collection,it appears to actually be the full version, as there are no demolabels or warnings anywhere, and I couldn't find any obvious limitations. It is however just the EXE with a few sample drawings. Works on Windows1.0x.

MyPaint v2.0.0 is now released!
Head over to the release notes if you want more details about changesHere we’ll go into more depth about some of the changes, and thingsyou should know as a user.
Linear compositing, spectral blending, compatibility
By default, MyPaint 2.0.0 uses linear compositing and spectral blending (pigment mode). This lends itself well to creating artwork emulating the use of traditional media.
However, there are some drawbacks too:
- Worse performance - will be addressed in later versions.
- Compatibility with other .ora-compatible software, like Krita
- Layer merging generally not WYSIWYG.
Apart from that, some will of course just prefer the old methods.Fortunately this is still possible by changing the default compatibility modeto “1.x”. When you work in “1.x” compatibility mode, old files will look the sameas they did in 1.2.1 and earlier, spectral blending is off by default and thedefault layer type is “Normal” instead of “Pigment”.
The drawback to “1.x” mode is that if you use pigment blending it will notwork as well as in “2.x” mode. Shuffle photo order for slideshow mac. The assumption is that most people will useone mode or the other.
Note that by default, if you open a file with a layer of type “Pigment” in it,MyPaint will switch to “2.x” before loading the file, unless this behavior ischanged in the options, or you use the dropdown in the file opening dialog toexplicitly open the file in “1.x” mode regardless.
View Rotation and View Zoom now factor in to brush strokes
Old MyPaint users may notice that brushes don’t work quite the same wayanymore. Specifically the rotation and zoom of the canvas now play a partcertain aspects of the dabs that make up the strokes.Hopefully nobody’s too unhappy about this, because it is not configurable.
The arrows show what the drawer/painter saw as “up” when drawingon the rotated canvas. In 2.0.0 the behavior is more like actuallyrotating a paper in front of you, rather than rotating along with theentire canvas yourself.
As for zoom, the zoom level is now factored in to speed calculationsand is also available as an input for brush settings.
New Brush Settings and Inputs
The maximum number of points in the input curves is increased to 64, providinga ridiculous amount of control to brush makers (much more than is necessary forthe vast majority of input mappings).

Symmetry Modes
Symmetry painting now has five modes to choose from (up from one, in 1.2.1):
- Vertical
- Horizontal
- Vertical and Horizontal
- Rotational
- Snowflake
Vertical and Horizontal refers to the orientation of reflection line, ratherthan the reflection itself - hence Vertical gives horizontal mirroring and viceversa. The observant user will note that Vertical and Horizontal` is a specialcase of Snowflake, but it’s a question of convenience and familiarity more thananything else.
Note that the symmetry mode does not provide “multibrush” symmetry.Instead of n separate brush strokes, it’s more like a single brush stroke copied n times(for every single dab). This is only noticeable when using a smudge brushon something that doesn’t follow the same symmetry as the active mode, but still good to be aware of.
New Paint X 1 06
Floodfill enhancements
The floodfill tool now supports:
- Offset
- Feather (blur)
- Gap Detection
- Cancellation
and a few other things.
New Paint X 1 02
Most use cases only really require the offset setting, for handling cases where thefill does not flow into the outline sufficiently.
New Paint X 1 01
If you need to use Gap Detection, be careful to not set the maximum gap sizetoo high. Ideally it should only be a couple of pixels larger than the largestgap in the area to be filled. Setting it to a distance that is too large is notonly slower, but also makes it more prone to identify “gaps” which aren’t actually gaps.
